Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed his admiration for Singapore’s fourth-generation leadership, praising it as a model for developing nations. During his discussions with Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Modi offered his congratulations and expressed confidence that under Wong’s leadership, Singapore would continue to advance rapidly.
Wong, who assumed office in May, succeeded Lee Hsien Loong, marking a transition within the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP). As the new Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Wong leads the fourth-generation PAP government, following two decades of leadership by Lee.
Modi, who visited Singapore following his trip to Brunei, emphasized that Singapore serves as more than just a partner; it is an inspiration for other developing countries. He highlighted collaborative efforts between India and Singapore in areas such as digitalization, advanced manufacturing, and sustainability. Modi also noted the significance of the ministerial roundtable established to enhance bilateral cooperation.
The Prime Minister underscored the strategic partnership between India and Singapore, citing a dramatic increase in trade and mutual investment over the past decade. He pointed out that Singapore was the first country with which India launched the UPI Person-to-Person payment facility and that 17 Singaporean satellites have been launched from India in the past ten years.
Modi also praised the contributions of the Indian diaspora in Singapore and expressed gratitude for the recognition of historical figures such as Subhash Chandra Bose and the Azad Hind Fauj in Singapore. He announced the upcoming inauguration of India’s first Thiruvalluvar Cultural Centre in Singapore, celebrating the ancient Tamil saint’s contributions to global thought.
As India and Singapore approach the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2025, Modi called for both nations to collaborate on a significant action plan to mark the milestone. He reiterated India’s commitment to working with Singapore to promote regional peace, stability, and prosperity, and thanked Singapore for its warm hospitality and honor extended to him during his visit.
